Il "Bianco" a Tavola

The Italian Majolica between 1500 and 1600
Musei Capitolini
Type: Applied Arts

The exhibition Il "Bianco" a Tavola: The Italian Majolica between 1500 and 1600 arrives at the Capitoline Museums in Rome after having been on display in two other major museums: the Museum of Ceramics in Ascoli Piceno and the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza.

The exhibition celebrates “the whites”, a specific style of majolica pottery, innovative for its shapes, designs and glazes, that arose in Faenza in the XVI century and from which takes its name. Indeed, it was originally known as the “pottery from Faenza” or faentini, the whites became so famous that French shortened its name to “faience”, that is now the French name for Majolica or Pottery. The exhibition presents 130 pieces, and starts with a section which illustrates the historical background of the production of the whites.
In addition to works of the famous workshops and popular masters are on display lesser-known works, but useful to document the widespread distribution of whites in many Italian regions, starting from Emilia Romagna (Faenza), where the whites originates, then Trentino, Lombardy, Veneto, Liguria, Marche, Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio, Abruzzi, Puglia, Campania, Calabria, Molise, Basilicata, Sicily and Sardinia.
