Foundation area
An opening leads off from the gallery into a foundation area formed by large retaining walls supporting the upper floor of the Tabularium.
The remains of the Republican Age paving can be seen on the wall facing the entrance; they were found in the immediate vicinity of the Temple of Veiovis.
At ground floor level we can see the remains of a building which predates the Tabularium.
One of the three rooms which have been preserved, contains one of the oldest mosaic floors ound in Rome, dating back to the second half of the II century BC and featuring a white background with irregular chips of coloured marble.
A metal mesh marks the presence of a cistern lined with opus signinum, uncovered during the course of a recent excavation and dating back to an earlier period.
